Visiting Professor Ronnie Wilbur (Purdue University): Analysis of Non-Manuals in Sign Languages

This presentation discusses the role of the facial/head/body postures and movements that accompany manual signs and the role that they play in sign language grammars. There has been a debate as to whether they are solely syntactic or primarily prosodic, but of course nothing this complex is ever that simple.  This presentation discusses what we know, how we know it, and what we can predict from it all. Syntax and semantics are winning the testing wars, but maybe other sign languages do things differently…
